This exceptional authentic pair of Louis XVI period wall sconces is a rare example of Sicilian decorative arts from the late 18th century. Hand-carved from Linden wood and originally silvered (gilded with silver leaf), these pieces showcase a delicate, openwork floral design characteristic of the era and region, centered on a stylized, repeating rosette motif surrounded by scrolling acanthus leaves. The elaborate carved wood backplates support wrought iron candle arms, which are gracefully curved and finished with faux candle sleeves for small electric bulbs, indicating a past conversion for modern use. The subtle wear, oxidation, and exposed red bole (the clay base for the original silvering) beneath the silver surface add a rich, desirable patina that authenticates their age and historical provenance.
